The 5 needs that make us Human

There are 5 things that a human being needs to survive Marslow an American psychologist in the 1970’s states: Physiological (this is breathing, eating, water, sleep), Safety and Security personally and economically, love/ belonging or some form of intimate relations, self esteem (basically confidence, respect and achievement and the last but not least self actualization (this is morality, creativity, spontaneity even problem solving). These are the Maslow's hierarchy of needs of a human being.

But Maslow never went into description of what happens when one of these needs is taken away or not at all evident in the person’s life anymore. I started to go into deep thought last night of the loss I have with two of these needs. Many people believe that a need can be replaced by another. Such as a person passing can be suddenly replaced by food or another form of activity or a strong relationship/bond that is broken can be replaced by physical or just plain mental satisfaction. But there is only so long before that need creeps up on you and surpasses the act you are doing to forget.

I’m not a hard core athlete or anything but growing up in an athletic household I started to learn of the ways of forgetting the needs. How an injury can be pushed into the back of your head so you can win. How emotions can be pushed aside so you can win, how even events that are monumental can be pushed aside to think of winning.

Now although I find winning or shall I say overcoming to be important. I’m starting to wonder if it is a good thing. Now, don’t get me wrong guys I believe winning is great. When I win in guitar hero I feel like I have conquered the world no better the galaxy. But it is the implication of winning that gets to me sometimes.

I understand to most losing is not an option, that for them winning means safety and food for their families, that winning could be monumental in the sense that if you win you will be the FIRST of your kind to conquer that event. It could even be that winning to you in a specific event could be the ONE GOAL you have had in life something you want to be able to tell your children you did. But if there is no passion or reason…then to me there is no reason to win and if you run into that person who has nothing to lose then that person has a need that has not been fulfilled as Marslow Pyramid states.

Sad to say I am one of those people. I want to conquer so many things and be at the top but I still have those needs that have not been fulfilled. Maybe one day I’ll figure out how to get through this pyramid and will have no need to overcompensate one thing for another. But that’s me, for you, just make sure in life that whatever you do whether it that you have a passion for it because if there is no reason or goal achieved in doing it there is nothing to be gained.
