A Winning Mentality

Back again with something interesting. A questionare was done among runners in america that asked " what is a winning mentality?" Many of the answers given were obvious but many were out of the ordinary. I find it interesting that all runners have the same exact mentality. And as stated by a Michael Jordan all athletes have a mind set...and that mindset is to do one thing...WIN. And here is the list that explains the ways to have a winning mentality and what some runners do to have a winning mentality.

There are key psychological characteristics a winning athlete must possess. These are just as important as natural ability and can be identified and worked on just as you would a physical limiter. Here are some tips that Runners have found that helped them achieve a winning mentality.

The ability to focus under pressure is a key characteristic of a winner.

A winning athlete will not get pulled off their game despite outside pressure or stimulus.

They remain calm, cool, and collected.

Races are fluid situations and strategy must be as well.

Never quit a race even if it is not going the way you planned. This is a bad habit to get into.

Have a deliberate strategy planned out.

Know your pacing parameters, threshold, and ability, and race accordingly.

Race your own race and do not get pulled off your game for any reason.

Focus on the process of racing and what is going on in you and around you, not the outcome.

Random training produces random results whereas specific training produces specific results.

Do not expect to be faster by simply putting the time in Winners train with purpose and specificity.

If you really want to get fast you need to define your limiters and come up with a corresponding training plan.

Use performance tests to regularly assess training progress.

Record and track all your work out data.

Get a good coach to put this all together for you.

So basically a winners' mentality does not just end with racing but extends to many areas of life it is pride and confidence in utilizing your ability. What is your winning mentality? With the Olympics up and coming hopefully you already have it in mind.
